10 writing tips for beginners

Updated: Jul 17, 2023

“Start writing, no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on.” — Louis L’Amour

Now that we've identified how to overcome writer's block let's start writing! Here are some easy tips for beginners, and writers of all genres:

  1. Write every day, and as often as you can. Practice makes permanent. Making writing part of your daily ritual will help you commit to your work.

  2. Write for yourself first. Tell the story you want to tell. It helps bring out a strong voice in your writing.

  3. Think of creative ways to describe visuals. The classic phrase "show not tell" applies to all writers. Let your characters explain what's happening, not you.

  4. Read genres that you write. Reading the works of others can significantly influence your writing and set the tone for your work.

  5. You don't always have to write in one genre or niche. Although many writers and bloggers would say that it's best to conform to a niche, I disagree. Exploring different types of writing has become an excellent muse for me. My last post was a wine review that I had the privilege of writing for a local winery. Trying something new brought a lot of excitement to my work, not just for the review, but for all of my writing! Having my blog while writing a novel brings a healthy balance to all elements of writing. Good writers expose themselves to as many scenarios and experiences as possible. Don't forget to live and write what you know.

  6. Research story structure and character development. Understand who your characters are. Always define a strong plot.

  7. Eliminate all distractions (see advice made in my writer's block posts). I work best in a well-organized environment. Find a writing station that brings you focus.

  8. Don't be afraid of feedback. After you've finished writing for yourself first, getting feedback from others can greatly impact your work. It helps to have some fresh eyes in your writing. Getting feedback can also help you understand your audience better, as well.

  9. Use psychology when writing. It's essential to know the personalities of your characters. Know them so well that they almost become tangible in your story.

  10. Understand writing styles and formatting. I studied writing in college, which trained me on how to write in different mediums correctly. If you are looking to self-study, I'd recommend reading a writing manual book that explains the fundamentals of writing that include Chicago Style and APA. The creative mind is imperative to a writer, but the reader needs these boundaries. Study and apply.
